Edit Box
Non-Linear Digital Editing
Background:
Edit Box is an on-line, random access, non-linear, digital editing suite
from Quantel.
Designed as a "complete solution", Edit Box has wide range of
graphics facilities including a DVE, frame based processing, colour correction,
chroma and luminance keying, texture effects and retouching. In fact, Edit
Box provides nearly all the facilities of its cousin Henry, but utilises
only three levels of fx at any one time, all of which now also feature shadow
layers. First and foremost though, Edit Box is an editor. And an excellent
one at that.
Facilities:
For both client and operator the Edit Box scores high on speed quality,
ease of operation and versatility. Processing powerful enough to handle
true random access means instant access to
any shot at full resolution. Although slightly slower than Rushes other
D1 suites for what is considered heavy effects work, the suite can layer
up to 3 images, with colour correction keying and DVE all at the same time.
Being truely non-linear, dissolves can be added, shots lengthened, new shots
inserted or old ones deleted all done instantly, without having to reconform
the cut.
This makes it an excellent suite for conforming from EDL and then fine-tuning
the cut. Also, since nothing is actually committed to tape during the editing
(although everything is
processed) your final edit master is immaculate first generation quality.
The editor can change his mind at any stage and a disc storage capacity
of 30 minutes allows further flexibility.
Graphics:
Edit Box is driven by a pen and tablet rather than the conventional edit
keyboard with an interface that is similar, if not identical, to a Henry's.
Paintbox is available as well as all the usual edit facilities like colour
correction, hue support, keying, layering and audio. Rushes Edit Box suite
also includes Max Effects with additional graphic tools allowing picture
manipulation. Our Editbox probably gives one of the best typography selections
in town because it not only features the new Edit Box integrated font with
1085 vector-based type faces, but also utilises the same Delta character
generator that is available in our D suites. Editbox's paintbox features
a variable sized brush and its DVE now has 1 lowlight and 2 highlights in
each channel.
Commercials and Music Work:
Edit Box is ideally suited to both music and commercials work. Edit Box
can handle most edits that the D1 suites tackle, but the added disk storage
capacity and archiving facilities make it especially suitable for longer
jobs and multi layer work with graphics. Simple clocks and sound lays are
easily accommodated in this suite.
Furthermore, all this creativity and flexibility can be switched to work
just as well in NTSC as it can in PAL.
