NOTES ON BLINDNESS is a 13 minute award winning short film, comprised of a series of individual sequences entitled Rainfall, Memory and Panic. It is a beautifully crafted and profound exploration of theologist John Hull’s traumatic and ultimately enlightening journey through blindness, which captures the emotional and intellectual range of his experience as a scholar, philosopher, husband and father.

In the summer of 1983, just days before the birth of his first son, writer and theologian John Hull went blind. In order to make sense of the upheaval in his life, he began keeping a diary on audiocassette. Upon their publication in 1990, Oliver Sacks described the work as ‘the most extraordinary, precise, deep and beautiful account of blindness I have ever read. It is to my mind a masterpiece.’

With exclusive access to these original recordings, directing duo Peter Middleton & James Spinney at Archers Mark made NOTES ON BLINDNESS, encompassing John’s dreams, memory and imaginative life, excavating the interior world of blindness.

NOTES ON BLINDNESS premiered in its entirety at Sundance Film Festival 2014 and has since gone on to play and numerous festivals picking up plenty of plaudits and awards along the way. It’s currently being developed into a feature, INTO DARKNESS, with Archer’s Mark producing.

Rushes Denny Cooper graded both the award winning individual instalments, which were funded by and premiered on The New York Times, and the complete short NOTES ON BLINDNESS in its entirety.
