Mercedes-Benz follows up from their recent viral campaigns staring sheep and chickens, with the favourite animal of the online community: the cat!
Watch as the cat effortlessly slides across Mercedes slick aerodynamics, exemplifying the coupe’s very low drag coefficient, to Rossini's Cat Duet sung by Nadja Michael.
Rushes Senior Executive Producer Norra Abdul Rahim was very happy to be working with Jung von Matt and Mercedes again… “It’s a sweet number and it’s hard to say no when you’re a cat fan!”
In consideration of the visual effects, the method of shooting in a studio was chosen for two main reasons: the controllability of the lighting, to capture the car beautifully, and also for the comfort of the other star of the spot - the cat!
Various practical methods were used in order to help the cat move in the balletic motion that the script called for. In a few of the shots these required extensive reconstruction of the car (and cat!) in order to remove them from view. In addition to Flame we had Sarah and Noel on Nuke to help out with ground work.
To show off all the special detailing of the car, many plates where shot with alterations to the lighting position and repositioned flags in order to isolate and enhance particular features. In some shots there were between 10-15 plates (including wheels, grill, lights, windscreen, multiple side panels etc) that, when combined, show the car off beautifully.
Rushes lead VFX artist Omar Akkari commented, “Mercedes was a cool project to work on because of the idea and the enthusiasm of the agency throughout the process. Also, it was a pleasure to collaborate with Ian not least of which because of his engaging stories from previous shoots but because of his technical ability and vision for the Mercedes 'Cat'.”
