Rushes Film&TV; completed over 50 VFX shots for the new Blockbuster musical “Les Misérables”.
This included the creation of a dramatic CGI pullback shot designed to show the revolutionaries barricaded into a small alleyway, the alteration of buildings to add Parisian architecture, complex rig removals and set extensions.

The technically challenging pullback shot starts with close up of Valjean (Hugh Jackman) cradling Marius (Eddie Redmayne) and ends showing an area of Paris ¼ of a mile across. The original plate was shot on set at Pinewood using a crane to exploit the full height of the studio. Rushes team then had to extrapolate the camera move and seamlessly extend the set to cover the rest of surrounding Paris and fill it with over a thousand digital soldiers, horses and cannons.

Working collaboratively with Double Negative, we shared a library of slum assets, lidar data and motion capture animation. Lead CG artist, Mark Pascoe, converted all of the model and animation data to work in Rushes's new Alembic and Renderman pipelines and the shot was completed in only a 4 week period.
