When Salt TV came to us with an idea for a Nokia/The Dark Knight Rises combination commercial, we were instantly excited by the proposition. Nokia was providing a vehicle to promote Christopher Nolan’s third Batman film whilst aligning the new Lumia range of phones with the appropriate demographic.
Director TuCasa at Salt wanted to make the transition between Nokia commercial and Batman trailer seem more like a Batman takeover, using falling rubble to shake and disrupt the standard Lumia ad as if taking over the screen. Craig Travis of Rushes CG department created the falling rubble, using supplied reference from existing Batman print campaigns and using dynamics to get a nice natural, heavy feel to the opening shot. To further highlight the idea Brad Le Riche used After Effects to make the Nokia Lumia phone shake and the light tiles flicker and fall off as the rubble falls.
Although a simple idea, marrying two very different brands together was always going to be a challenge and using the rubble transition really helped to join the two sections together making a more cohesive fluid advert that promoted both Nokia and the Lumia range as well as the latest Batman film.
