Academy director Wiz channels a retro Americana of cars, girls and bubblegum in the new Kings of Leon video for ‘Supersoaker’, the first track to release from their upcoming album ‘Mechanical Bull’.
Rushes director of Colour Grading Simone Grattarola comments, “Wiz came to us with a very interesting treatment, referencing hand painted and digitally reproduced techniques of colourising black and white film and Technicolor. It was decided film was the only way to go. There was an amazing book, Rock Dreams that provided a lot of the inspiration for the look.”
Simone and Rushes VFX Supervisor Leo Weston established a method of recreating the colour tinting process of coloured black and white film but with a modern spin on it, collaborating with director Wiz to produce some of the 'experimental' looks throughout the promo. Wiz and Dan Landin (DoP) then worked off the early Rushes test shots to help establish how they would light and art direct certain scenes.
Leo comments, “Multiple grades from the telecine department were combined in Flame and scenes rotoscoped into each other to create the 'scrapbook' feel. This was a really organic process, and working with Wiz was a real pleasure.”
Everyone, including the band are delighted with the end result.
