Carling "Starlings"
5th Dec 2006: This fantastic commercial, created by Beattie McGuinnes Bungay and posted at Rushes is a new direction for the Carling Brand.
The new campaign recognises that Carling is Britain’s most sociable lager and uses this inclusive angle as its major selling point. The ‘Starlings’ commercial shows beautiful, inspiring real footage of Starlings in flight all set to the Hard Fi track ‘Living For The Weekend’.
Martin Goodwin, senior VFX artist at Rushes, had the task of compositing larger denser groups of starlings, which were created in CGI by Lee Tibbetts, as the film grew. Martin commented on the job “Rather than adding things in, the job was a case of filling the picture out and widening some off the shots. We also had to remove Bill Oddie, who was featured in the original BBC footage and this proved quite tricky in parts”.
Simone Grattarola had an equally challenging job. It was necessary to grade a number of different skies, many of which were very dark and blue, to give them a magic hour feel. Simone says, "We were working from tape and because of the dull, lifeless skies present in the footage, we were definitely up against it in terms of creating that magical feeling. We used power windows to build layers of colours within the sky to give it density and continuity. All the time we were working within the limitations of tape so we were constantly refining and rebuilding. All the work we put in was worth it as the finished piece really helps to enhance the beauty of these amazing birds!’
Andy Cray, Carling Brand Director, Coors Brewers says, ‘We’re really excited about this new campaign, it’s a step-change in larger advertising and will shake up the whole category. With ‘Belong’, we’re getting to the heart of what Carling is all about – a sociable brand, sharing good times with your friends.’
