Tracks worked by on by Rushes were 'Map of the Problematique', 'Take a Bow', 'Newborn' and 'Sunburn'.
‘Map of the Problematique’
We used a combination of plasma textures from Saphire’s Texture spark which were multiplied with simple outlines of footage of hands and also text of lyrics from the song. We built a mosaic effect that allowed us to distort each axis separately and use displacement mapping to extrude the resulting textures into a 3D landscape of flashing coloured blocks.
‘Take a Bow’
We built lots of simple textured cubes and then exploded each one into hundreds of pieces using a combination of layers and particles. This, being one shot for the length of the video, was a massive build and render.
‘Newborn’
Based on Fibonacci’s golden ratio, we built a massive repeating spiral surrounded in images of mathematical equations and scientific codes, and attempted to scale it infinitely for the duration of the track. Due to Flame’s own limitations with scaling, a quick re-think was needed that enabled the same effect in a different way. We then used expressions to make the spirals dance and weave in time with the music.
‘Sunburn’
A combination of wave textures and optics, wrapped around a displaced bi-cubic sphere to create a big sun. This image was then motion time-warped and morphed to create the slow bubbling effect.
Director Simon Bennett comments, “Due to limitations on time and budget for this project, very little source material was shot. Leo was able to develop concepts and imagery, which could be entirely generated within Flame. As I was previously not fully aware of the potential of the software, working with Leo helped me develop more of an understanding, and we were able to take the concepts to another level - one which far surpassed my expectations, and that I had not thought possible. I look forward to our next collaboration.”
