Two out of three ain’t bad!

Tuesday 1st February 2005

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences have announced this year’s nominations for Achievements in Visual Effects, and Rushes Artist in Residence Charles Darby has scored a double whammy with two of the movies he worked on in 2004 being nominated: I, Robot and Harry Potter - Prisoner of Azkaban.

It’s not the first time Charles’ matte paintings have featured in Oscar winning movies;
Titanic, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon to name just two, but in Hollywood you’re only as good as your last picture and we think Charles’ art work rocks!

Matte painting at its best is a surprising visual effects discipline and Darby’s artwork on Prisoner of Azkaban was used in mind-blowing combination with live action that required the manufacture of enormous 650 foot long canvas printouts of the digital files Charles had created.

Anyone wishing to see Charles’ work, up close and personal, can seek it out this month at Century, Shaftesbury Avenue, where many of his movie matte paintings are on exhibition throughout the club until February 28th after which they will be hung at Rushes.

The Oscar winners will be announced in LA on February 27th so watch this space for an update!
